This Stone Soup APR starts with a bit of meat--maybe gristle, it needs a long cook--but you know the drill. We provide the fire, kettle, and water--you add the goodies.
For some time I've wondered why the Boston Globe has recently set up a section on Rhode Island news. Are they gunning for the Providence Journal? ProJo has a long and proud history. Decades ago--in the Loeb era--the Globe went after New Hampshire's Manchester Union Leader, but finally walked away without doing much damage. Is that's what's happening here, I wondered.
Saturday the Globe gave the backstory, without mentioning its own expanded coverage of the neighboring state. In 2014 ProJo was bought out by Gatehouse Media, which was then acquired by Gannett. They have nearly killed it. Once it had a dozen bureaus--now it has a dozen reporters in total.
Josh at TPM lived for some years in Rhode Island and offers a perspective.
This will sound, even to me, a bit like blaming the victim. But this is an important time to subscribe to your local newspaper.
UPDATE:
Several folks report that they have trouble finding this. There are different ways of using the site, and views into it: I look at the chronological RECENT STORIES list, and this was only the fourth story since 7AM. But you know what we need?? A title image! A graphic of a Stone Soup kettle. That would catch the eye to the right of the diary title. I haven’t had much luck finding a good one—please offer any images that seem like a good fit!
